Materic

The Materic series includes experimental works developed between the period of the studies in Milan (1970-1975) and the late 1970s. It arises from a personal interest in materials and, like for the Combustions and Fragments series, in response to the ongoing state of socio-political tension. However, over the years, the series focuses on ecology and expresses a critique on urbanization.

The canvas, here, is replaced by wooden panels, a reference to the Early Influences. We also denote an experimental and painterly use of ephemeral and waste materials, materials belonging to the world of furniture making, such as saw dust and ash, cement and organic material, mixed with everyday objects.

The early Materic works, such as Supermatter (1975), coincide with accumulation surfaces, often perishable and occupied by layers of matter, evoking a sense of precarious instability. While, later works of this series, such as Untitled (1979) are referred to as Pourings. In Pourings the material turns into action: cement mixed with recycled materials is freely poured onto a plywood.
