Fragments

The Fragments series emerged in response to the social fracture of the mid-1970s.

Earlier Fragments appear reprocessed with oxides and organic material and torn. Large in size, residual presences, elements of a combustion process.
The canvas is abandoned in favor of particle wood panels. A choice that follows the logic of material dispersion, where the hardness of the particle wood in the early works gives way over the years to the lightness of paper.

Later works engage in an investigation of space: they assume smaller dimensions and are freely arranged on walls and surfaces of occasional environments. Site-specific elements, materic reminder of the Traces series.

In 1992, Marangelo participated in a group exhibition at the Castello di Sartirana Lomellina (PV) with Threshold, a site-specific work that engages with the concept of open discontinuity, where small fragments are installed around a portal, between two spaces. In 1994, he took part in the group exhibition Exterior Interior at Villa Borgia di Usmate, with Fragments in Space, a work that conceptually concludes the Fragments series and initiates the Space series.

"The semblance of the artifact survives, the recovered material is recognizable in the appearance of the fragment, almost like an immense irregularly shaped shard, embodying the function of spatial director and, still, of signage.”
